If you’re tired, vote us out in 2023, Senate president challenges Nigerians

The president of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has reacted following the call for the upper legislative chamber to be scrapped because of the perceived jumbo pay senators earn.

VAM News gathered that Lawan on Friday, November 20, faulted the idea while declaring a retreat for top management staff of the National Assembly and National Assembly Service Commission open in Abuja.

Speaking further, the lawmaker representing Yobe North challenged Nigerians to vote out lawmakers in the 9th Senate if they don’t like their faces.

While warning that there could be anarchy if the Senate is scrapped, Lawan described the red chamber as a leveller that ensured Nigerians were equally represented.

Back in 2019, Lawan defended the N13.5 million monthly salary being paid to each of the 109 senators in the country.

According to Lawan, the major component of the amount is for oversight assignment allowances.

However, former senator Ben Murray-Bruce said that he was resisted by his colleagues when he advocated for lower wages and allowances for public officials and a higher minimum wage for the Nigerian worker.

Earlier, it was reported that a former Senate leader, Ali Ndume, called for caution among Nigerians over the controversy generated by the jumbo salaries being earned by the members of the National Assembly (NASS).

He faulted calls for the slashing of the lawmakers' pay, adding that he believes their emoluments do not have any effect on the economy.

The lawmaker who represents Borno South in the Senate on Friday, October 24, said that members of the National Assembly only got N128 billion allocation in the 2021 budget of N13 trillion.
