Residents call on Osun state Govt to address flood risk caused by new structure on waterway

Residents of Alapupu, a community area under Egbedore local government are currently calling on the state government of Osun to come to their aide as a building under construction has subjected their properties to flood risk.

A resident, Yusuf Bello said he and other residents of the area wake up everyday with fear of their buildings and other valuable properties washed away by flood should there be a heavy downpour.

He is not alone with that fear, according to what many other residents told DOCPETINFO in separate interviews, but Mr Bello was able to discuss the origin of the existential threat and what he think can be done to salvage the situation.

Alapupu is in Egbedore, a local government in Osun West Senatorial District, and it bounds Ojutu bridge in Irepodun LG.

With the position of the structure, it shows that it has effect on the movement of erosion heading into Ojutu river.

Providing a background on how the area suddenly turned into a flood-prone environment, Mr Bello pointed at an ongoing structure along Ilobu road as the major threat they face.

According to him, the structure is being erected on a waterways and that created a different route for flood, which has now poured into his building at least three times in recent weeks.

“Anytime rain falls, all of us in that community usually go into panic as we are not sure on what will happen.

“This building (pointing a building to reporter) is the most victim as they are consistently flooded and we always feel pity for them.”

Mr Bello who said he has been living in Alapupu for about 9 years, said they are not used to flooding until about six months ago when the erection of the building blocking waterways started.

When queried by our reporter on the identity of the owner of the building or who sold the land, he simply deny knowledge and directed us to the Baale (head of the community) for detailed information.

His position was no different from that of Sheriffdeen Adeyemi, who though a tenant, expressed the ugly state of things, saying he would not have secured an apartment in that area had he knew that is the situation of things there.

“I was not at home when there was downpour and my wife had to call me that our home is about to be flooded,’ he told DocpetInfo. “I rushed home and was shocked at what I saw, stirring fears in me on what could happen to our properties and even lives.”

“We have even sent pictures of the situation to our landlord and urged him to do something quick to save his property, that is regularly hit by flood anytime there is rainfall,” adding that community leaders should seek government intervention to forestall any calamity.

At the Baale’s Palace, Rafiu Omobosoye, who is the head of the community disputed the position of residents on the causes of the flood in the area, insisting that the building being pointed at by residents was not the issue.

Chief Omobosoye explained that a culvert being built by the federal government directed erosion from Okini, another town in Osun, down to the community, and that he has since draw the attention of the Ministry of work to it.

“They started the culvert in February and that directed erosion from Okinni and other areas here,” he noted, stressing that “that is the problem and not the building people are talking about.”

“We have drawn the attention of the Federal Ministry of Works to it and I’ve copy of the letter we gave them with me”, noting that he and community representatives who met with the government were assured that the appropriate thing will be done and erosion will be channeled to where it won’t affect residents.
